In this term, the supplier / shipper is responsible for just the basic cost of the goods with the packaging. The buyer / consignee is responsible for the goods and for paying any inland charges in origin and destination, freight charges and insurance once the cargo leave the factory.
Free on board (F.O.B.) -
This term means the supplier / shipper is responsible
for getting the goods on board where delivery
takes place. The usual practice is for the airport
(for air shipment) or sea port (for ocean shipment)
at which the goods are to be loaded on board to
be stated, such as "F.O.B. Hong Kong"
The price covers the basic cost of the goods plus
all the expenses involved in getting the goods
on board. The buyer / consignee is responsible
for the freight charges from then on and takes
delivery once the goods are on board. He / she
is also responsible for the insurance.
Cost, insurance and freight
(C.I.F.) -
This term usually includes the port of destination
such as "C.I.F. SEOUL". To the cost
of the goods the supplier / shipper adds the costs
involved in getting the goods on board, the cost
of freight to the port of destination and the
insurance. The buyer / consignee is responsible
for the inland charges at destination.
